US Airways and Fuel SchoolWhile my son was recovering from his recent surgery a story of great importance was taking place at US Airways. The story of how much fuel to carry and who should decide. I am late sharing the facts as I heard them but in no way should that take away from the importance of the story. Here is what I have been told by an insider: This story centers around a management who have a history of successful interference, manipulation and intimidation of the flight department of AWA. For whatever reason, the former West pilots were compliant and passive in the face of usurpations of their authority, by managers. Obviously, that is not the nature of the original US Airways pilot group, as evidenced by the USA Today advertisement; I am sure, that was the last thing Doug Parker and Scott Kirby expected out of a union...their re-education and re-orientation continues! The company, about three-weeks ago, informed eight of our most senior A-330 and B-767 Captains that they had been singled out for "special" training. The company contends that between Jan. 01, and Mar. 31 these pilots requested increased fuel loads of, on average, 2,400 lbs.- 34.5% of the time.......my response?-what is your point?! To give this some perspective; these are (excepting one) International flights, from PHL to Europe, at a time of the year when European weather is famously bad and changeable. In addition, at least one of the, "Fuel School Eight" is a Line Check Airman, and as such, had student Captains/First Officers with him, and might just have had a reason to increase the "comfort level" of the new guys. These guys have been singled out for a simulator ride, which is by definition, a jeopardy situation. Neither the FAA, or USAPA were consulted on the syllabus. Nowhere does this "training" appear in the AQP agreement or manual, which is a legal and controlling document, signed onto by the Company, the FAA and the Union. Le Anne, it is obvious that this constitutes harassment, intimidation and behavior modification by management. Joseph Stalin once remarked to the effect of this: If you shoot just one, a thousand will listen. If you have more questions, write. I think that anyone who flies, "gets it". A none-too-subtle baseball bat approach to motivation....
